Military packaging refers to adding materials to military items to preserve (protect) them during transportation. There are many factors to consider during the packaging process, including selecting the right container and properly bracing, weatherproofing, and marking packaging. Military specification, or mil spec, packaging codes can be challenging to follow.

The Department of Defense has specs for shipping, transporting, and storing goods which is important because it ensures that any military equipment is properly packaged for intact distribution and storage.

This article offers a brief overview of some of the most common DoD specs and why it’s important to stay compliant.

Common Military Packaging Codes

Below are some of the most common military packaging codes you’ll hear referenced, but keep in mind, this is is not exhaustive. There are many military packaging codes.

MIL-STD-129

MIL-STD stands for “military standard.” MIL-STD-129 is a mandatory standard that helps ensure military markings for shipment and storage are consistent/uniform. The standard applies to equipment, supplies, and ammunition and outlines what identification markings should be on shipments. Markings include numbers, letters, symbols, and colors. For example, any hazardous chemicals must be marked as such, and any hazardous labels must follow specific color schemes.

The standard also requires UID and RFID on items, specifies requirements for exterior and unit container markings, and describes symbols and handling requirements for hazardous, sensitive, or special items. The standard was revised in 2014 to include requirements previously stated in MIL-HDBK-129.

MIL-STD-147E

This standard outlines the methods used to form-bonded palletized unit loads of military supplies. These methods are to be used with standard, general-purpose, 40 x 48-inch pallets. They can also be modified for use with other pallets.

MIL-STD-3010

MIL-STD-3010 covers test procedures for packaging materials. Test procedures covered include water vapor transmission rate, seam strength, oil resistance, and puncture resistance.

MIL-STD-2073

MIL-STD-2073 is a comprehensive standard outlining general preservation methods and military packaging development processes (as distinct from commercial) to protect any goods against corrosion, damage, and degradation. There are several sections within this standard, most notably MIL-STD-2073-1E, which outlines the standard codes for items going into the military distribution cycle.

MIL-DTL-197

MIL-DTL-197 highlights requirements for all types and sizes of stock and production bearings and associated parts.

MIL-DTL-6060

MIL-DTL means “military detail spec.” MIL-DTL-6060 outlines requirements for complex, heat-sealable, water-vapor-proof bags used in military preservation applications.

MIL-DTL-15011

This defense detail spec establishes the design, materials, fabrication requirements, and examination of 4-way entry, wood post construction pallets.

MIL-P-16789

MIL-P codes are specifications for planned maintenance. MIL-P-16789 covers the packaging of all pumps, including primer movers and support items. Support items include reciprocating, centrifugal, oxygen, hydraulic, and prime movers.

ASTM-D1974

ASTM-D1974 covers the required methods for closing, sealing, and reinforcing fiberboard shipping boxes used for shipment. This includes solid and corrugated fiberboard boxes but not triple walls, which are covered under ASTM-D5168.

ASTM-D3951

AST-D3951 establishes minimum requirements for packaging certain supplies and equipment, excluding ammunition, explosives, or hazardous materials.

ASTM-D5168

ASTM-D5168 was developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials and isn’t necessarily specific to the defense industry. This standard covers packaging requirements for new triple-wall corrugated fiberboard containers for domestic and overseas shipments.

PPP-B-1672

PPP-B-1672 governs the requirements for boxes, including those with reusable materials and cushioning. PPP stands refers to single-use products, packaging, and paper products.

MD00100452

MD00100452 covers the requirements for the palletization of Enterprise Business System (EBS) items of supply for handling, shipment, and storage. This code also includes any specialized requirements for medical materials, hazardous goods, and more.

MIL-PRF-131k

This performance specification (PRF) code outlines the requirements of barrier materials, including waterproofing, greaseproofing, and heat sealing.

Why Compliance Matters in Military Packaging

Compliance is critical when packaging military materials. Durable packaging protects military goods against damage during transportation and while in storage. Additionally, military specs ensure that equipment meets and exceeds certain performance expectations. As a result, there are many different regulations to follow.

How to Comply With Mil Spec Packaging Codes

A lot is involved in preserving military items. Items must follow Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) and United States Army Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command (TACOM) solicitations, as well as Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation (DFAR) clauses, and standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

Furthermore, the type of product you’re shipping and what it’s being shipped in will dictate which packaging codes to comply with. That’s why it’s important to turn to experts like Export Corporation, who have decades of experience in military packaging.
